Applying for jobs in Australia and not sure if your resume fits the local style? Good news: it's fairly straightforward — but there are a few things Australian employers expect that trip up newcomers and grads.

The Australian resume structure

Top to bottom:

  1. Name + contact details — phone, email, suburb/city and state (e.g. "Macquarie Park, NSW"). No need for your full street address.
  2. Professional summary — 2–3 lines.
  3. Skills — grouped and relevant.
  4. Work experience — most recent first, with achievement bullets.
  5. Education — degree/course, institution, dates.
  6. References — usually "Available on request", or listed if asked. (See [references on a resume](/blog/references-on-a-resume).)

What's different in Australia

  • No photo, no date of birth, no marital status. Including them can raise discrimination concerns — leave them off.
  • "Resume" and "CV" are used interchangeably here for most jobs (unlike the US). Academic and medical roles still use a longer CV. (More: [CV vs resume](/blog/cv-vs-resume).)
  • Spelling: use Australian/British spelling — "organise", "specialise", "centre".
  • Length: 1–2 pages for most roles.
  • Working rights: if you're on a visa, a short line stating your work eligibility helps.

Quantify like everywhere else

Australian employers love evidence just as much as anyone. "Served customers" is weak; "Served 60+ customers per shift with a 97% satisfaction score" is strong.

Casual and part-time roles count

Especially for students and new arrivals — retail, hospitality, and casual work absolutely belong on your resume. Frame them with real achievements, not just duties.
